Charter agreement translation

A charter agreement is a maritime commercial contract governing the charter of a vessel for a specified voyage or period. Voyage, time and bareboat charters establish different arrangements of rights and obligations; the translation must preserve this distinction.

In practice, contracts are usually based on established standard forms and drafted in English; translation is generally requested into Turkish for court, enforcement, tax and internal company assessment files. Rendering concepts such as laytime, demurrage and the vessel's seaworthiness using their established equivalents in Turkish maritime commercial law enables the contract to be correctly understood before local authorities.

Which institutions request this document?

Certification requirements

Is notarisation required?

Notarized translations are required in court and enforcement files; a sworn translation is sufficient for internal company use.

Is an apostille required?

It is not required for the contract itself; if foreign notarized copies need to be used in official procedures in Türkiye, the legalization chain is assessed separately.

There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.

Preparing your document

  • Send the entire agreement with its annexes and addenda
  • Specify the intended use: a court file and an internal company review require different levels of certification
  • Send any previous translations used by the parties to ensure consistent terminology

Frequently asked questions

Are the standard form clauses also translated individually?

Yes; the binding text of the agreement is a whole. Printed form clauses, handwritten special conditions and addenda are translated together; the precedence of special conditions over the form is preserved in the translation.

How are terms such as laytime and demurrage translated?

Using their established equivalents in Turkish maritime commercial law: laytime is rendered as astarya and demurrage as sürastarya; the English term is retained in parentheses at its first occurrence so the parties can follow the original concept.
