Language certificate translation

Language certificate is the general term for certificates issued by organizations such as TOEFL, IELTS, Goethe, DELF and TÖMER that document language proficiency. They are included in qualification recognition, scholarship, visa and job application files; translation is needed when the certificate's language differs from the application's language.

A practical point should be made at the outset: international certificates issued in English (TOEFL, IELTS) are usually accepted without translation in applications conducted in English. Translation is mainly needed when Turkish documents such as TÖMER certificates are submitted abroad, or German or French certificates are used in applications in a third language. Score tables, proficiency descriptions (CEFR levels) and verification codes are preserved exactly in the translation.

Which institutions request this document?

  • Immigration authorities — for visa and citizenship applications with language requirements

  • Institutions in Türkiye — with Turkish translations of foreign certificates

Certification requirements

Is notarisation required?

Notarized translations may be required for official applications; a sworn translation is usually sufficient for academic files.

Is an apostille required?

Apostilles do not apply to certificates from private organizations; documents from public institutions are assessed according to the country.

There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.

Preparing your document

  • Make sure any verification code or online verification address on the certificate is visible
  • Check which language the institution you are applying to requires for the certificate
  • If the score report is on a separate page, send it together

Frequently asked questions

Do my IELTS results need to be translated?

Usually not for applications conducted in English; institutions verify the results online. If the application is conducted in a third language or the institution expressly requests it, a sworn translation is prepared.

Are CEFR levels (B2, C1) translated?

As proficiency codes are an international standard, they are preserved unchanged; only the explanatory text is translated into the target language.
