Diploma translation

A diploma translation is a core document for overseas university applications, YÖK equivalency procedures, work permits and professional recognition files. It covers high school, associate, undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas.

The degree title, graduation date, institution name and any honors distinction are reproduced in full. As degree titles have different equivalents in different countries, the wording in the source document is retained; equivalency assessment falls within the relevant institution's authority.

Which institutions request this document?

  • Council of Higher Education (YÖK) — for equivalency applications
  • Foreign universities — for postgraduate and exchange applications
  • Professional chambers — for professional recognition procedures
  • Employers and immigration authorities — for skilled work permit files

Certification requirements

Is notarisation required?

Notarized translations are required for equivalency and official recognition applications. A sworn translation may be sufficient at some universities' preliminary application stage.

Is an apostille required?

An apostille is generally required for diplomas to be used abroad. As a diploma is an administrative document, the apostille is obtained from the provincial or district governor's office. Whether it is applied to the original diploma or its notarized translation depends on the destination institution.

There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.

Preparing your document

  • Send the front and back of the diploma; the reverse may contain certification and registration details
  • Provide the spelling of your name in the passport — this is the field most frequently requiring correction in equivalency files
  • If the diploma is lost, a graduation certificate or a document serving in place of the diploma can be obtained
  • Preparing it together with the transcript offers advantages in time and cost

Frequently asked questions

Is the apostille applied to the original diploma or the translation?

Practice varies by destination institution. A common method is to apostille the original diploma first and then translate the document and apostille together. Some institutions also require an apostille on the notarized translation.

Is the certification on the back of my diploma also translated?

Yes. Registration, certification and stamp information on the reverse demonstrates the document's validity and is reproduced in the translation.

Is my electronically signed digital diploma accepted?

Many institutions accept it; however, an originally signed document or certified copy may be requested where notarization is required.
