What is a sworn translation?
A sworn translation is prepared by a translator who has taken an oath before a notary and certified with the translator's own stamp and signature. Through this certification, the translator declares that the translation corresponds to the source document.
A sworn translator's authority is valid before the notary where the oath was taken. Translators therefore complete the required formalities separately with each notary they work with.
What is a notarised translation?
A notarised translation is a translation prepared by a sworn translator and certified by a notary. The notary verifies the translator's oath registration, attaches the translation to the source document, and applies a seal and certification statement.
This is the format required for most applications to institutions in Türkiye. If the document will be used abroad, notarisation alone is often insufficient; an apostille is also required.
Which type is required in each situation?
There is no universal rule; the requirement is determined by the institution requesting the document. Although the following practices are common, exceptions exist:
- Consular and visa applications: notarisation is usually required.
- YÖK diploma equivalency applications: a notarised translation is required.
- Court and enforcement files: notarisation is required.
- Applications to certain private institutions and companies: a sworn translation may be sufficient.
Checking the receiving institution's current list of required documents prevents unnecessary costs and delays.
The difference in costs
A sworn translation involves only the translation fee. A notarised translation also involves a notarial fee, which is determined and collected by the notary.
When requesting a quotation, it is therefore advisable to ask for the translation fee and notarial costs to be stated separately.
Frequently asked questions
Does a notarised translation also require an apostille?
In most cases it does if the document will be used abroad. The apostille is obtained on the notarisation.
Which notary carries out the certification?
A notary can certify only translations prepared by a translator whose oath is registered with that notary. The process is therefore carried out at the notary where the translator is registered; we handle it on your behalf.
