Austria's own system
In Austria, an official translation is prepared by a court-authorised "allgemein beeidete und gerichtlich zertifizierte Dolmetscher" and bears the translator's seal and signature. This register is specific to Austria and differs from the authorisation lists in Germany.
Two routes are seen for files from Türkiye: many institutions accept apostilled translations notarised in Türkiye, while citizenship and certain civil registry procedures may require a translator from the Austrian register. The receiving authority's instructions specify the requirement.
What is required for each procedure?
- Family reunification and settlement permits, including the Red-White-Red Card (Rot-Weiß-Rot Karte): civil status documents, apostilled and translated
- University applications: diploma and transcript; the university's admissions department assesses associate and bachelor's degree equivalency
- Citizenship: both apostilles and translations are carefully required
- Regulated professions: recognition (Anerkennung) is handled by professional bodies and ministry departments
Do not confuse the system with Germany's
Sharing a language does not mean sharing systems: Germany's anabin/ZAB assessment is not valid in Austria; Austrian qualification recognition enquiries are handled through ENIC NARIC Austria.
A document to be used in both countries may need only one translation, but equivalency and recognition applications are made separately in each country.
Practical sequence
- Obtain a recently issued document and have it apostilled at the governor's office or district governor's office
- Have a notarised German translation prepared
- If the institution requires the Austrian register, have the translation prepared by a translator on that register; if an apostille is required, apply to the competent authority
- Match names to the passport
Frequently asked questions
Is the German translation I obtained for Germany valid in Austria?
As the language is the same, the content remains applicable; acceptance depends on the institution's requirements. If it requires a translator from its own register, further certification may be needed — we can review the wording of its instructions together.
Where do you apply for qualification recognition in Austria?
Academic recognition enquiries are handled through ENIC NARIC Austria, while professional recognition is handled by the relevant professional authority. For university enrolment, the university itself usually performs the assessment.
