A passport translation is requested for company formation, opening bank accounts, purchasing property and notarial procedures abroad. As the passport itself is submitted in visa applications, a translation is generally not required.
The passport translation also serves as the reference for the spelling of names in other documents. Names and surnames in every document in an application file must exactly match the Latin-letter spelling in the passport.
Which institutions request this document?
- Foreign notaries — for property and company procedures
- Banks — for opening accounts and identity verification
- Trade registry offices — for company formation abroad
- Immigration authorities — for residence applications
Certification requirements
Notarized translation is standard for official procedures abroad.
Depending on the country of use, a notarized passport translation may require an apostille. It is obtained from the provincial or district governor's office.
There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.
Preparing your document
- Send a clear photograph showing the entire identity page
- Ask the institution whether visa and entry/exit pages are also required
- The passport must remain valid throughout the application process
Frequently asked questions
Are all passport pages translated?
Generally, only the identity page is translated. If entry/exit records are requested, the relevant pages are also included; this increases the time and fee.
My name is spelled differently in my passport. Can you correct it?
The spelling in the passport is used in the translation. If the record is incorrect, you must apply to the Population and Citizenship Affairs authorities for correction.
