A birth certificate (Form A / international birth registration extract) shows a person's date and place of birth and parental information. It is requested for birth registration abroad, citizenship applications and school enrollment.
There is an international format (Form A) that civil registry offices can issue in multiple languages. Some countries accept this format without translation; checking which format your application institution requires can save you time and money.
Which institutions request this document?
- Foreign civil registry and immigration authorities — for birth registration and residence procedures
- Consulates — for citizenship and family reunification applications
- Schools and universities — for enrollment
- Social security institutions — for family benefit applications
Certification requirements
Notarization is usually required for citizenship and registration procedures. Some countries do not even require a translation of documents obtained in the international format (Form A).
As an administrative document, its apostille is obtained from the provincial or district governor's office. Some countries may also accept documents in Form A format without an apostille.
There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.
Preparing your document
- First ask the civil registry office whether it can be issued in the international format (Form A)
- Tell us how the child's name is spelled in the passport
- The parents' names must also match their passport spellings
- This service also covers translating a foreign document issued for a child born abroad into Turkish
Frequently asked questions
Does a Form A document need to be translated?
As Form A is issued in multiple languages, some countries do not require a translation. However, translation is required if the destination country's language is not included on the form.
I will use my child's foreign birth certificate in Türkiye. What should I do?
The foreign birth certificate must first be apostilled in its country of origin, then translated into Turkish and notarized. We recommend confirming the civil registry office's current requirements.
