A death certificate (Form C / international death registration extract) is an official record showing the date and place of death. It is requested for inheritance procedures, insurance compensation and widow's or orphan's pension applications.
In inheritance files, a death certificate is generally insufficient on its own; it is submitted together with a certificate of inheritance and a civil registry extract. Preparing the document list as a whole avoids having to repeat the process.
Which institutions request this document?
- Foreign courts — for inheritance and succession procedures
- Insurance companies — for life insurance claims
- Social security institutions — for widow's and orphan's pension applications
- Banks — for account transfer procedures
Certification requirements
Notarized translations are requested for inheritance and compensation files.
As an administrative document, its apostille is obtained from the provincial or district governor's office. Some countries may also accept documents issued in the international format (Form C) without an apostille.
There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.
Preparing your document
- Choose the international format (Form C) if it is available
- The certificate of inheritance may also need to be translated for an inheritance file
- For deaths occurring abroad, the apostilled original of the foreign document is required
Frequently asked questions
Does the certificate of inheritance also need to be translated?
Usually yes, for inheritance procedures. A certificate of inheritance is issued by a court or notary and is a separate document.
Which documents are needed for a relative who died abroad?
The apostilled original of the death certificate issued in the relevant country, its notarized Turkish translation and any other documents requested by the civil registry office are required.
