Certificate of inheritance translation

A certificate of inheritance identifies the heirs and their inheritance shares; in Türkiye, it is issued by civil courts of peace and, under certain conditions, by notaries. Its translation is required for inheritance procedures concerning overseas bank accounts, real estate and company shares.

The heirs' identity details, share ratios (expressed as fractions) and the name of the issuing authority require particular care; a single digit error in a share fraction can cause a loss of rights. Work is also frequently carried out in the reverse direction: translating foreign courts' inheritance judgments into Turkish for land registry and banking procedures in Türkiye and preparing them for recognition and enforcement files.

Which institutions request this document?

  • Foreign banks — for transferring deceased persons' accounts
  • Foreign land registry and registration authorities
  • Foreign courts and notaries
  • Land registry directorates and banks in Türkiye — with Turkish translations of foreign judgments

Certification requirements

Is notarisation required?

Notarized translations are standard in inheritance procedures.

Is an apostille required?

It is almost always required for use abroad; the judicial document chain applies to certificates in the nature of a court judgment.

There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.

Preparing your document

  • Send a complete copy of the certificate bearing a certificate of finality
  • Provide the heirs' names as spelled in their passports; name matching is critical
  • Send the additional documents required by the overseas institution (bank, land registry) in the same file

Frequently asked questions

Is a certificate of inheritance obtained from a notary valid abroad?

Acceptance depends on the rules of the requesting country and institution; some authorities require a court judgment. Confirming the institution's requirement before applying and obtaining the document accordingly avoids paying twice.

Can a foreign certificate of inheritance be used directly in Türkiye?

As a rule, the apostilled original and a notarized Turkish translation are required; a court recognition and enforcement judgment may also be required for land registry and certain other procedures. The process should be clarified according to the institution carrying out the transaction.
