Power of attorney translation

A power of attorney is a notarized document authorizing a person to carry out specified transactions. It is used for property sales, company transactions, litigation and inheritance matters abroad.

The scope of authority is decisive in this document. If a power of attorney is drafted too narrowly, the representative cannot carry out the required transaction, and the process must begin again. The intended transaction should be clarified before the power of attorney is drawn up.

Which institutions request this document?

  • Foreign notaries and land registry authorities — for property transactions
  • Courts — for litigation
  • Trade registry directorates — for company transactions
  • Banks — for account and loan transactions

Certification requirements

Is notarisation required?

A power of attorney is already drawn up before a notary; if it will be used abroad, its translation is also required to be notarized.

Is an apostille required?

As a notarial act is considered an administrative document, the apostille is obtained from a provincial or district governor's office. Consular legalization applies in countries that are not parties to the Hague Convention.

There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.

Preparing your document

  • Obtain the representative's complete identity details
  • Clarify the transaction to be carried out and the country of use before the document is drawn up by the notary
  • Some countries require specific wording; request a sample text from the receiving institution
  • Make sure the spelling of the first and last names matches the passport

Frequently asked questions

I am abroad; how can I arrange a power of attorney for use in Türkiye?

You can have it drawn up at the Turkish consulate in your country of residence. A power of attorney drawn up this way can be used directly in Türkiye without further legalization.

Does a power of attorney have a validity period?

If no duration is specified, it is generally considered valid until revoked. However, some institutions may request a document issued after a certain date.
