A marriage certificate (Form B / international marriage registration extract) shows the date and place of marriage and the spouses' identity information. It is required for marriage registration abroad, family reunification and residence permit applications.
If a surname has changed because of marriage, the translation must clearly show the relationship between the former and current surnames. Otherwise, documents such as diplomas issued under the former surname cannot be linked to the passport.
Which institutions request this document?
- Foreign civil registry authorities — for marriage registration
- Immigration authorities — for family reunification and residence permit applications
- Consulates — for spouse visa applications
- Social security institutions — for widow's and orphan's pension procedures
Certification requirements
Notarization is standard practice for family reunification and registration procedures.
As an administrative document, its apostille is obtained from the provincial or district governor's office. Some countries may also accept documents issued in the international format (Form B) without an apostille.
There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.
Preparing your document
- Ask the civil registry office whether it can be issued in the international format (Form B)
- If your surname has changed, you may also need to obtain a civil registry extract
- Provide the passport spelling for both spouses
- A foreign spouse's name is reproduced as it appears in their own passport
Frequently asked questions
Which document is requested instead of a family record book?
A family record book and a marriage registration extract are different documents. Overseas procedures generally require a marriage registration extract obtained from the civil registry office.
My surname has changed, but my diploma bears my former surname. Is this a problem?
Institutions require a document showing the surname change so that they can establish the connection. A marriage certificate or civil registry extract is used for this purpose and is also translated.
