A driving license translation is requested for vehicle rental abroad, license exchanges and traffic procedures in some countries. For short visits, an international driving permit is usually a more practical solution.
In driving license exchange procedures, accurate reproduction of the license categories matters alongside the translation. Turkish categories B, C and D may differ from their counterparts in the destination country; the category information is retained as it appears in the source document.
Which institutions request this document?
- Foreign traffic authorities — for license exchanges
- Vehicle rental companies
- Insurance companies — for accident files
- Immigration authorities — as an attachment to a residence file
Certification requirements
A notarized translation is required for driving license exchanges. A sworn translation may be sufficient for vehicle rental.
Some countries require an apostille for license exchanges. It is obtained from the provincial or district governor's office on the notarized translation.
There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.
Preparing your document
- Send both sides of the document; category and date information appears on the back
- Consider whether obtaining an international driving permit would be more appropriate
- Check the current document list for the country where you will exchange your license
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an international driving permit and a translation?
An international driving permit is issued in Türkiye by the Touring and Automobile Club of Türkiye. It is multilingual and valid for one year, removing the need for translation for short-term use. Permanent procedures such as a license exchange require a translation of the license.
Are license categories converted in the translation?
No. Category information is reproduced as it appears in the source document; equivalence assessment belongs to the relevant country's traffic authority.
