A translation of a Republic of Türkiye identity card may be requested for banking, rental, insurance and school enrollment procedures abroad. A passport is generally sufficient for visa applications.
The Turkish identity number, serial number and issue details on the identity card are retained in the translation. Data on the chip is not translated; only information printed on the card is reproduced.
Which institutions request this document?
- Foreign banks — for opening accounts
- Schools — for student enrollment
- Rental and insurance companies — for contractual procedures
- Notaries — for certain overseas procedures
Certification requirements
A sworn translator's stamp is considered sufficient for most procedures; notarization may be required for official applications.
An apostille is rarely requested for an identity card. If required, it is obtained from the provincial or district governor's office on the notarized translation.
There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.
Preparing your document
- Send clear photographs of the front and back of the card
- The image must have no glare, and every field must be legible
- If you have a passport, also provide it as a reference for the spelling of your name
Frequently asked questions
Is a photocopy of the identity card sufficient?
A legible copy is sufficient for translation. Where notarization is required, presentation of the original may be requested.
Can an old-style identity booklet be translated?
Yes. However, some institutions require a current identity card; it is advisable to ask beforehand whether the older document will be accepted.
