Prescription translations are required for obtaining medication abroad, declaring medication at customs and continuity of treatment. Some countries require documentation for prescription medication at border entry.
The active ingredient name, dose and directions for use are translated in full. As drug brand names vary between countries, clearly showing the active ingredient helps pharmacies find the equivalent.
Which institutions request this document?
- Foreign pharmacies and physicians
- Customs authorities — for declaring personal medication
- Insurance companies
- Airlines — for carrying medication in the cabin
Certification requirements
A sworn translation is generally sufficient; notarization may be required in insurance files.
It is rarely required.
There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.
Preparing your document
- Send a photograph of the prescription including the physician's stamp and signature
- If the active ingredient name is not on the prescription, ask your physician to add it
- If you will take medication abroad, ask the airline about quantity limits
Frequently asked questions
Is the drug name translated into its equivalent in the destination country?
No. The brand name is preserved; active ingredient information is also translated if it appears in the document. Identifying an equivalent is the responsibility of the physician and pharmacist.
Are additional documents needed for medication prescribed under a medical report?
Some countries also require a physician's report. You should check the destination country's health regulations in advance.
