Technical specification translation

A technical specification defines the technical requirements of a job or product and forms the basis of the tender and contract process. Translations of specifications are required for participation in international tenders, overseas procurement and joint manufacturing projects.

Specification translation brings together two disciplines: industry-appropriate technical terminology and binding specification wording (distinctions between "shall," "minimum" and "preferably"). A single word can change whether a requirement is mandatory or recommended; the translation preserves these levels of obligation exactly. Standard references (TS, EN, ISO, ASTM) are reproduced unchanged.

Which institutions request this document?

  • Tendering authorities and administrations
  • International contractors and consortia
  • Suppliers and manufacturers
  • Engineering and consulting companies

Certification requirements

Is notarisation required?

Tender files require sworn or notarized translations according to the administration's requirements; sworn translations are common at the bid preparation stage.

Is an apostille required?

It is not required for the specification itself; the chain for official documents in the file (authorization, registration) is planned separately.

There is no universal rule. The institution requesting the document determines its certification requirements. The information above describes common practice. Tell us which institution you are applying to and we will help clarify the required certification.

Preparing your document

  • Send the specification with its annexes and drawing lists
  • Specify the tender timetable; for large texts, delivery is planned in stages
  • If your company has established terminology preferences, send your terminology list

Frequently asked questions

Is text on drawings also translated?

Upon request; drawing title blocks and notes can be translated, while technical symbols are preserved unchanged. Clarifying the number of drawings at the quotation stage enables accurate scheduling.

Are units and tolerances changed?

No; values, units and tolerances are preserved unchanged. Unit conversion belongs to engineering assessment rather than translation.
